T and I had Phil Morarre out to the property yesterday to give us a private lesson on his abrasive trim with the angle grinder. The method is really so much easier than using hand tools (which I could never do ~ thou part of the problem might have been the sharpening of my knives....thanks Phil for the lesson!). Tony got an "A" on using the grinder. I went from a "D" to a "B" or something like that. I don't understand why anyone would even use hand tools again, because you can get a beautiful barefoot trim in about 20-30 minutes for your average horse.
Notice Shahara's tail tied up. Very, very important! Last time we did the trim Sabi's tail came out and T had just let the safety switch go but the grinder was still turning. It wrapped up in Sabi's tail. Luckily it was Sabi and the grinder was almost stopped. Having that paddle switch on the grinder is very important. You don't have time to find a switch if it's grinding up into the root of a horse's tail! Maybe those Quarter Horses would like that ~ but not a flingin' Arabian! Ugly!!!
Shahara was the last horse we did. She was a little difficult, but Phil gave her some time to figure out how to stand quietly and when she didn't he took her off to do some Parelli work with her.
It didn't take Phil more than a few minutes to get Shahara to be calm and willing to stand. Natural horsemanship with someone who knows what they're doing is amazing. She was good for the rest of her trim. Phil loved her too, thought she was quite beautiful.....she's my next sculpture subject.
Is T meditating or praying???? All my animals love him. Look at my new rope! I told Phil & Tony they couldn't get it dirty. Then Phil told us a story about some guy at a barn he trimmed at where this guy's rope still looked new after 4 months! (How'd he do that?) They re-named the guy "Bob White Rope". Cracked me up!
Tahoe's hind foot.
Tahoe needed a lesson also. I think this horse is so handsome. He has a big trot but he just is much more worried about life. Interesting when you're on a narrow, cliffy trail....
After Phil left, Tony and I went to our neighbors Adam & Joanie to take back an extension cord. I just love them. They're funny and they have helped us IMMENSELY with watching our horses and a whole bunch of other stuff. I owe them WEEKS of animal sitting when we get up there.
Anyway, Adam was trying to trim his horse's feet when we drove up, so we got the angle grinder and T gave him a lesson. T and Adam are macho guys who don't like to be told what to do but also are quite handy with power tools.
This old guy's feet looked so much better after the guys were done. Apparently Adam's farrier forgot to do him last time he was there so this poor boy has some dishing and breaking in the toe.
This horse looks so much better than 30 minutes before. Slowly I have converted my boyfriend, now I'm on to my neighbors!! What a great life!
I know this isn't about trimming, but how do you have two guys who are going to live next to each other go thru the pain of getting tattoos and not put names in them!!????
